ROWing Into My Deeps… ROWnd Three Goals

Goals for ROW80 ROWnd 3, 2012

If you are looking for my goals, unembellished, they are here.

My first Round, I was  excited and apprehensive.  it was a big step, and, although I felt it was the time for me; it was a huge thing.  I took many, many leaps of faith.

For my second, I leapt and charged ahead.  I had grown so much, as a person and a writer, that I felt a need to plunge forward and test myself to see just what I could accomplish.

And now, as I embark upon ROWnd 3, I feel a need to settle into this new way of life, to grow it deeper and wider, to blend it more fully with the other parts of my soul and my living…

Annalise demonstrates the wonders of her 3DS with cousins Nate, Sam, and Carlee.

And so, this time, no mad dash.

No wondering if I can do it.

Just me – and some goals I chose because these are areas where I feel a deeper, richer pull –  something in my nature leading me…

I’ve learned a lot from ROW80, and so much of it is in tune with the way living and learning happen, here…

Carlee, my father, and the family’s newest addition, Carlee’s niece, Shelby Lynne, born April 21.

I intend to lay myself bare.  I intend to Run naked through the Huntlands, and into the caverns of myself…I intend to hunt, and to be tender, and to delve my truths…

And I intend to share what I discover…

Won’t you join me, and know me better?

WIP Novels:

Trueborn Series

  • Trueborn:
  • Reread current rough drafts from 1998-9ish and 2000.
  • Create story arc for rewrite.
  • Triage existing research.
  • Consider title change.
  • Blood and Breath:
  • Complete story arc (unless completed before the ROWnd starts).
  • Create a flash fiction piece for each story arc point.
  • Use Scrivener to compile into a pre-rough draft.
  • Consider creating a blog for this novel or perhaps for the series, with pages for each novel as it progresses… (I have created a blog, shanjeniah’s Treuborn Jottings, which will be a home for all the volumes in this series).
  • Chameleon’s Dish:
  • Finish inputting into Scrivener ( completed during break).
  • Compile a print copy for editing, page count, and to see what it looks like!
  • Go through each scene to edit, take notes, and list research questions.
  • Complete basic research based upon library books and websites; looking for information to enhance later digging and prevent hugely obvious gaffes).
  • Experiment with removing Tisira’s story as a YA novel, with a potential optional add-on of the fanfic elements….not sure how this will work, exactly, but I think it might be the best approach to have something marketable without sacrificing my vision.
  • Print this version too!
  • Create a print copy of this experimental version, as well.
  • Watch and/or read Henry VIII – which is the play during which the Globe burned. Get cozy with it the way Nockatee and Henry would be.
  • Begin canvassing for beta readers for both versions…does not need to be the same group for both.

MIah, in Silly Mode. ;D

Flash Fiction WIPs:

  • Look through all current pieces in my Writing Bullpen files.
  • Complete/edit/rewrite where indicated.
  • Explore markets.
  • Begin compiling a list for possible ebook anthology.
  • Go through old story notebooks for source material.

Essay WIPs:

  • Look through all current pieces in my Writing Bullpen file.
  • Compile list for possible ebook collection (by theme; just brainstorming at present).
  • Complete/edit/rewrite as needed.
  • Research markets – BOLDLY GO!

handsome boy…

  • Fourth Quarter reports for both children (due Sept. 1).
  • End of Year Narrative for Lise (due Sept. 1).
  • Standardized Test for Miah (due Sept.1).
  • IHIPs for both children (due four weeks after receipt of packet from school district).
  • Begin setting up portfolios for both children – invite them to be a part of this process! =)
  • Relax, enjoy, learn, grow, laugh, and … BREATHE!

My loves…..they make my soul sing!

Reading:

  • Continue reading books for Bookmark Break Challenge – aim for 7 in July, 8 in August, and 9 in September, but these targets will be flexible – summer is prime traveling time for the kids and I and we have things planned and others we’re considering.
  • Read at least one book each month from my Kindle Cloud Reader, as a learning and experimenting process.
  • Learn how to download ebooks and audiobooks from the Stillwater Free Library and the Southern Adirondack Library System (SALS).
  • Continue reading an average of three articles from my To Be Read files, weekly.
  • Continue reading five blogposts each week, on average.
  • Consider getting a pair of reading glasses for magnification purposes, and so my getting-older eyes can handle all my readin’ and writin’! (I bought a pair on June 29. Very helpful, although bifocal lenses would be more so – I get a little blurry looking through them unless reading, and I look up a lot!).

Maybe the last pre-gap picture…there is a very wiggly tooth in that smile!

Other Writing:

  • Write 1 book review each week.
  • Play with flash fiction pieces as the mood strikes; aim for two submittable stories each month.
  • Play with essay ideas as desired; aim for three submittable essays each month.
  • Complete the two guest posts left ovcr from ROWnd 2, if not completed before ROWnd 3 begins.
  • Write at 750 Words every day, with possible hiatuses for Unschoolers Rock the Campground (July 12-16); Learn Nothing Day (July 24); Northeast Unschooling Conference (August 23-7; and kids’ birthdays (July 8, September 2).On my birthday (July 29), I WRITE!!!
  • Use 750 Words for whatever – flash pieces, essays, venting, ranting, reports, book reviews, etc.

Annalise – just add water.

Blogging/Connecting:

  • The Unfettered Life:
  • Post on average at least biweekly.
  •  Make at least one post an update, perhaps roughly categorized to make creating reports easier.
  • Begin using this blog in a way that really supports documenting, so that it does double duty as a personal tool for me in the way it once did.

Sister-cousins, Carlee and Annalise

  •  shanjeniah:
  • Aim to post, at least weekly, non-ROW80 update material on . This may take the form of adding to my pages; creating new ones; other challenges, blog hops, etc; writing samples of various types; musings on writing and life; guest posts; photo essays; or whatever else seems relevant at the time.
  • Consider and perhaps experiment with creating a blog for the Trueborn series. (Started a blog on June 25) This could contain excerpts, bits of what I am working on (character sketches, research, flash fiction, story arcs; inspirational images and quotes, etc. Its purpose would be specifically to share the process of creating the series, from the beginning on….in a way, a window into m world and my mind as none of my other spaces are….I find myself very excited about the above idea….I am coming to see this series at last, after most of a lifetime of living with it, as a cohesive, lovely entity almost ready to emerge from its ancient chrysallis. I want to welcome its rebirth with a new home that embraces while allowing a wide, free space to span and soar. And, in so doing, maybe I will stretch and soar just a bit, myself!
  • Continue submitting guest posts; aim for three again this ROWnd.
  • Continue hosting guest bloggers as they present themselves. Gently, sweetly, and a little persistently request that they present themselves! =)

Happy girl!

  • Organizing/Tootling my Horn…
  • Continue inputting June 2000 Writing Practice Notebook, if not completed before ROWnd begins.
  • Mine June 2000 Writing Practice Notebook for usable bits and pieces.
  • Choose a new notebook; input into Penzu.
  • Continue sorting and filing files on laptop.
  • Look into having external hard drive repaired, or at least getting the files from it.
  • Continue reading marketing and ebook publishing sites and articles.
  • Draft a loose Mission Statement to guide me through the rest of the ROWnd, and carry me forward into the next.
  • Set aside time each week to winnow email. Read items being saved for later reading, sort or dispose as indicated.
  • Be bold and daring in commenting, sharing, and submitting. Declare myself, learn, grow, and sometimes do things that make me uncomfortable. Open and blossom!

Zest for Life!

  • Celebrating Life!
  • Add some form of specific motion (t’ai chi, swimming, hiking, biking, skating, dancing, etc) to each week. Keep track of what, where, when, for how long, and how I felt during and after.
  • Fill us all up with joy, and continue cultivating family peace.
  • Spend time cleaning and beautifying my personal internal and external spaces each week.
  • Embrace and be present in all my moments.
  • Allow my emotions to be as they are. Practice expressing them calmly and reflectively.
  • Tend kindly and sweetly to myself and others. =)

Three cousins – Nate, Sam, and Annalise.

July is a good and natural month for me to focus on a more introspective set of goals, and an increased presence in my life.

It’s the month most fraught with emotional energy, for me…

  • July 8 is Annalise’s birthday –  always accompanied by memories of how frightened we were for her –  it was a high risk pregnancy.
  • July 9 will mark one year of estrangement from my parents and sister.  There was an ugly ambush, three against one, in frony of four young children.  No one behaved as well as those children needed us to, and I realized that I do not want to be around those who feel it is acceptable to unleash rage and ridicule on those they do not agree with, or with parents who still carry out abusive patterns with their long-grown children, as though the fact of parentage gives them perpetual right to do so.
  • July 12 – 16, the children and I will be at Unschoolers Rock the Campground 4, in Plymouth, MA.  Lovely long summer days at the lake, in the lodge, or around the campfire with families we don’t get to see as often as we would like…and perhaps new friends to be made, and maybe a trip to Plymouth, as in the past two years, or, finally, to Boston, where we have not yet been…

Sam and Lise share a private moment….

  • July 13 is Elijah’s birthday (five days short of a year before that of the baby sister he didn’t live to meet).  Five days from the delight of Annalise’s big day, to the memories of a baby born not breathing, and the 12 days of heartrending limbo that followed…
  • July 22 was my first fiance, Tim’s, birthday. He died of cystic fibrosis in  April 1995, and we buried his ashes on his birthday.  I am rich for having loved and been loved by him, and there will be bittersweet remembrances.
  • July 25 marks the ninth anniversary of Elijah’s death –  a death we prayed for, because his life was torture without benefit (he was comatose for most of it, with extremely low brain function, and so prone to grand mal seizures that only toxic levels of medication quelled them).  And yet, how to accept that this brand-new, sweet-smelling, beautiful baby you are holding is not there, and never again will be?  Nine years, and I still really only live with the sorrow, unable to unravel all the paradoxes of it…
  • July 29, only four days later, I will turn 43.  I don’t have parties or a big to-do anymore – it’s too soon to rebound from the memories of Elijah’s Days, and too close to the end of what is inevitably an emotional tumult of a month….

swingin’ good time!

We generally throw the kids a joint birthday celebration the first weekend in August, and I truly enjoy all the messy noisy kid-bliss it brings.

So, if I seem somewhat less sunny this month, please don’t fret.  It’s just the deeper, shadowy places July calls forth.  The sorrow blends with joy, the memories blend through each moment, the ebb with the flow, as at no other time in my year.

I am well, and I will be well.  I’ll just be who I am, in July, moment by moment, date by date.

Playful Spirits!
